Development is the process of making something progressively better. The current mainstream cultural paradigm believes that the world is developing, and that this is a good thing. Hence "developing" and "developed" nations. development in this instance often refers to economic development.

The mainstream concept of development does not accept the validity of some other cultures (such as many indigenous cultures), and expects those cultures to eventually see the light, and try to develop to first world standards.

The process of development often creates problems due largely to cultural misunderstandings between the "developer" and the "developee", and such misunderstandings can leave the developee in a much worse condition than previously.
