About envirowiki

Helping Out

envirowiki is a space for practical and theoretical knowledge about all things relating to environmentalism, social justice, and sustainability. It aims to create a usable database of information for people helping to create a more sustainable and equitable society, and for those wanting to live more sustainably.

Contents

[edit] Aims

To provide a knowledge database on environmentalism, including:

  • Theory and debate
  • Skills and practical knowledge
  • Campaign information and history
  • Environmental science

Envirowiki aims to become an integral part of the environment movement by bringing together knowledge in an accessible way, and to give an informed basis for those trying to counter the environmental untruths and misconceptions prevalent in the mass media and mainstream culture.

[edit] What envirowiki is not

envirowiki is not:

  • a tool for converting rightwing, neoliberal greenie haters to environmentalism. It is a tool for helping others to do that.
  • a billboard for advertising. Post information about campaigns and future action, but please refrain from canvassing.
  • boring - humour and artistic expression are quite welcome here, but care should be taken with certain things, such as irony, as written language often doesn't accurately express such feelings.
  • a blog - this is information and arguments, not personal opinion. Try to avoid "I" statements ("I think..", etc.). If you have made your argument on your own blog, feel free to post a link to it.
  • wikipedia - we don't need the whole story of what a thing is here, just that which is environmental. If you want a balanced picture go to Wikipedia.

[edit] Envirowiki Vs. Wikipedia

Wikipedia aims to be a comprehensive encyclopaedia of general knowledge. It is edited to maintain a neutral point of view, and excludes topics that might generally be conceived of as trivial.

In contrast, Envirowiki is a tool for the environment movement. It allows people to add views and information that may not fit with wikipedia's encyclopedic style, or may appear trivial to a general-knowledge encyclopedia.

Unlike Wikipedia, envirowiki makes no claim to be unbiased, it generally puts the environment and social justice first, and renounces economic-rationalist ideas that money might have a higher value to society than the environment does. That said, envirowiki strives to remain factually correct, and present arguments in a clear, rational, scientific manner.

[edit] History

Envirowiki was started in early August 2006.
