Eraring Power Station

From Envirowiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Eraring Power Station is a 2.64GW powerstation near Dora Creek, Lake Maquarie, NSW, Australia. It's a similar size to Bayswater Power Station, but uses slightly less coal (does it run less, or is it more efficient?). Eraring was commisioned as part of a 30 year construction program to bring one new generator online every 12 months, this was increased to every 9 months, in part due to the government wanting to built more aluminium smelters[1]. Construction began in 1977, and all boilers were comissioned by 1984[2]

Eraring is owned and run by Eraring Energy, a state-owned corporation, which also own 2 wind farms (just under 15MW total), and a number of hydro systems[3].

Contents

[edit] 1 Energy production

Eraring produces about 25% of NSW's electricity[4]

[edit] 2 Coal Consumption

Eraring burns 5.2-6 million tonnes of coal per annum from local coal mines (depending on which page you look at )[5][6]. This would equate to 19-22 million tonnes of CO2/annum.

[edit] 3 Emissions

Greenpeace says Eraring emits 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum[7].\

[edit] 4 Water Consumption

Eraring uses 21,000L of water/second for each or it's 4 units (which would total 1,814,400,000L/day - seems a lot). Some of that water is salt water - it claims to use 4 million litres a day of fresh water, for all uses[6]. It also purifies and uses about 5,000,000L of sewerage per day in it's boilers[4][8]

[edit] 5 Action

Eraring powerstation has been the target of a blockade by Greenpeace - 27 activists blockaded including an ex-coal miner, and 16 locked on, saying "Eraring, an old and inefficient plant, is one of eight coal-fired power stations in New South Wales. These plants are responsible for half the state’s and 13% of Australia’s greenhouse pollution."[7]

[edit] 6 Random crap

Eraring is completely exempt from stamp duty[9], under it's own act (1981[10])
