It should be noted that the english term free actually refers to two distinct concepts:

• Free as in freedom - libre in latin - meaning the ability to move and do as one pleases
• Free as in no cost - gratis in latin - meaning no monetary or trade cost

This can be extremely problematic within english (most other languages make a distinction between the two), as people come to associate low cost with freedom of the soul. This may be one of the causes of materialism in neo-classical economic/capitalistic systems.
