Grasberg mine

Grasberg mine is a gold and copper mine in West Papua. It is the largest gold mine and the third larges copper mine in the world. It is jointly owned by US company Freeport and UK/Australian company Rio Tinto.
8 people killed, and 5 badly injured in a landslide 2003, bringing worker safety issues into the spotlight.
tailings from the mine are known to have contaminated the head waters of the Aikwa River, and toxins and copper have found far down the river. fish in the river are extermely scarce.
