Biodiversity is a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity." It encompasses multiple tiers of diversity: genetic diversity between individual members of a single species (intra-specific); diversity of species within a community; and diversity of communities within an ecosystem (both of the later are "inter-specific").

Ecosystems that are highly productive (high biomass) are often also highly diverse. For example, rainforest ecosystems are highly biodiverse, supporting a huge array of different species, different trees and plants, birds, mammals, insects, mould, fungi, and other organisms.
