Nuclear waste
From Envirowiki
Nuclear waste is not a product, an object or a commodity. It is literally a state of mind, an attitude which is almost universally taken for granted today. It arises from the delusion of industry, joined by much of society, that whatever they happen to not want at the moment can be condemned by words like "waste" or "garbage" or "trash". The use of these terms is meant to imply that no beneficial use of that object is contemplated but some way must be found to evade further responsibility for maintaining it or finding a use for it.
The core term, the neutral one might be "radioactive byproducts from the use of radioactive materials". The concept of "waste" has no application. By attaching the word "waste". there is the implied assumption that there is a consensus that the product has no use and it is acceptable for the current or last owner to shed responsibility for his creation of the product (such as by discarding it into a dump which he then abandons - the common way to avoid responsibility).
The fact is that an assemblage of radioactive products enjoys no more certificate of irresponsibility than anything else. The fact of radioactivity does not distinguish a product from an unwanted pancake. The pancake can be eaten (if still edible) or composted and returned to the soil as an amendment. There may be hundreds of other more creative ways to use an unwanted pancake. We will not know all the ways unless we do research into unwanted pancakes, which will never get done if we simply name it as "pancake waste". In the same way, we will not know how to reuse radioactive by-products unless we do the research to find out how to use them. However, by using the sobriquet "waste", we set up a mental structure where no intelligent research is needed, since we no longer recognize responsibility.
In other words, we should be avoiding all reference to "nuclear waste" in all applications and should be treating it like any other by-product. My solution is to design ultimate reuse of all products and byproducts into every product that we as a civilized society allow to be created, before it can be created, sold or used. We only have "waste" because we allow the irresponsible creation of products which are bereft of the kind of design needed for responsible handling. If a product or process is not capable of being designed for perpetual cycling, we should not allow it to be produced or used. The fact that a process involves radioactivity changes nothing.
