Papua New Guinea is a country in the Oceania, in the western Pacific Ocean. It is half of New Guinea, the largest island in melanesia, the other half of which is West Papua, a region colonised by Indonesia.

Papua New Guinea use to be a colony of Australia, however it is now a sovereign nation. It's capital is Port Moresby.

Papua New guinea is a largely covered with tropical rainforest, and peopled by hundreds of different cultures of first peoples (there are over 800 languages on the island).

There are a number of large mines on the island, owned by miners such as Rio Tinto (ie. Ok Tedi, Grasberg mine) and Lihir Gold, mining for gold and copper. Due to partly the lack of public public scrutiny and disrespect for first peoples and the environment, many of these mines have a history of toxics pollution in rivers.
